Take tea in TST – with scones or dim sum
Alex Havret/Apa Publications
One of the best pleasures of a visit to Hong Kong is to take a break from the clamour of streets and shops and relax with a steaming cup of freshly brewed tea. Spoil yourself in a refined refuge in Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) and take tea the English or the Cantonese way.
Warm, oven-fresh scones and finger sandwiches await in The Lobby at The Peninsula hotel (Salisbury Road; tel: 2696 6772; hongkong.peninsula.com; daily 2–6pm; [map] C1), which serves traditional English afternoon tea. Note that advance booking is not possible. Next door at 1881 Heritage, another top-notch afternoon tea is served in Heritage Parlour (1/F, Hullet House, 2A Canton Road; tel: 3988 0101; daily 2.30–5.30pm; [map] B1), which can be had on its harbour-facing balcony.
The Cantonese term yum cha literally means ‘drink tea’, but it also refers to the enjoyment of a tea-fuelled dim sum meal. Two of the most refined places for yum cha are at Spring Moon in The Peninsula, a take on a Shanghai teahouse with fine dim sum and a ‘tea master’ who explains the differences between 29 varieties; and imperial-looking Shang Palace (Basement, Kowloon Shangri-La, 64 Mody Road; tel 2733 8754; [map] D2), where 10 premium teas are brewed with a monthly changing dim sum list.
The Murray
On the other side of the harbour in Central, the city’s newest heritage hotel, The Murray (22 Cotton Tree Drive; tel: 3141 8888; daily 2.30–5.30pm), also serves a fine afternoon tea – with elegant china and an interesting house tea and coffee blends – in its sleek Garden Lounge.
